来自北国挪威的三人组合the white birch，自96 98年自製了两张早已绝版的限量发行专辑，时隔四年终於在德国厂牌glitterhouse旗下发行了第三张专辑star is just a sun。和同乡的kings of convenience一般，the white birch的音乐充满了醇美恬静之美，超凡脱俗的嗓音如天降下的瑞雪，透明得让你只能直瞪着它发愣，而思绪与魂魄早已飞到绵延天际的白色山脉之上。然而 the white birch的音乐本质与清新民谣风格的kings of convenience相比，却又更冷静乾净。於氛围的营造上，透过高反差的录音技巧，如同迷幻飘逸的残雪之姿，建构出强烈到可比sigur ros的巨大空间感。
透过人声与电子音场的共鸣，回响，聆听这张专辑如同经历一场迴旋迷宫般地时空追逐，从极度冰冷到极度温暖，步步精準，招招致命。与其说这是后摇滚或室内乐派实验音乐，不如说北欧已经建立了自己的一套声音谱系。光谱的一端是原音乐器，另一端是电子合成乐。手法的差异带来了聆听时的不同乐趣，但带给我们的却是不同於芝加哥或格拉斯哥的冰火之音。
冬天的寒冷使人看来纯静，而不论处在什么季节，star isjust a sun的音乐在你四周撒下了一张透明的网，自动将你和外在的一切隔离。不论周遭的环境是如何俗不可耐，聆听the white birch时，当你闭起双眼，带来的是纯粹的片刻宁静。
欧洲的最边上，斯堪的内维亚半岛在此延伸。而在这一隅，却不乏一批出色精细的音乐人。他们的音乐内省不张扬，呈现出如瑞典的恬淡清新，挪威的舒缓大气等等。the white birch正是这其中的一支。
the white birch，白桦，1996年成立于挪威的乐队。曲风以sadcore/dream-pop为主。现有三名成员，分别为主唱ola flottum，贝司手ulf rodge以及鼓手hans christian almendingen(原负责电子合成器的成员frode ls arnesen于1999年后离开乐队)。96年成立之后的发行了一些demo，以及首张正式专辑《self-portrayal》。97年发行ep 《left hand》。98年首度与担任过motorpsycho，hope sandoval等一系列大牌唱片制作人的helge sten合作，为乐队制作唱片《people now human beings》，唱片推出后获得业界不俗反响。2002年在沉寂了四年以及遭遇乐队成员变迁以及各人生活变化之后，再度与helge sten合作创作了《star is just a sun》，由德国独立厂牌glitterhouse发行。此张专辑的发行让更多的人们开始关注the white birch。amg曾对此张专辑作出如下评价：“star is just a sun在令人为之微痛的氛围中，锻造了一种呓语的浪漫剧式的隐忍情调。”全篇在主唱的假声吟唱以及器乐的衬托下，着实呈现了一种似乎被水包围着的冰冷和柔韧的质地。听者在聆听间实现情绪里抽离到被充实的乐感。星辰，浮光，白雪，以及眩目的日光等等相关的幻象都可能出现在脑海之中。从开篇作为intro出现的肃静简约的《air》到沉稳优雅的终篇《atlantis》十首曲目，都完美的成为一个整体，彼此各有特色而又绝对终于基调。
