D: You can only have two motives and I would interfere with either.
C: What can he mean?
E: The surest way to disappoint him would be to ask him nothing about it.
C: Do tell us, Mr. Darcy.
D: Either you are in each other’s confidence, and you have secret affairs to discuss, or you are conscious that your figures appear to the greatest advantage by walking. If the first, I should get in your way. If the second, I can admire you much better from here.
C: Shocking. How shall we punish him for such a speech?
E: We could always laugh at him.
C: No. Mr. Darcy is not to be teased.
E: Are you too proud, Mr. Darcy? And would you consider pride a fault or a virtue?
D: That I couldn’t say.
E: Because we’re doing our best to find a fault in you.
D: Maybe I find it hard to forgive the follies and vices of others or offences against me. My good opinion once lost, is lost forever.
E: Oh, dear, I cannot tease you about that. What a shame, for I dearly love to laugh.
“C: Will you not join us, Mr. Darcy?” 你不来加入我们么，达西先生？

With his last breath, his father bequeathed me the rectory in his estate. He knew I had my heart set on joining the Church. But Darcy ignored his wishes and gave the living to another man.
E: But why?
W: Jealousy. His father, well, he loved me better and Darcy couldn’t stand it.
E: How cruel.
W: So now, I’m a poor foot-soldier. Too lowly even to be noticed.
Elizabeth asks Wckham: “I must ask, what is the manner of your disapproval of Mr. Darcy?”
this is a very old British English expression: “what is the manner of your disapproval of sb”? it is the same as “why you disapprove sb or why you don’t approve sb?”. In fact we don’t use approve to convey the meaning of dislike in colloquial English. But in some formal occasion, we could use this expression like “I kind of disapprove working over time.”
What is the manner of 也就是相当于what is the way of 这里Elizabeth问他，你为什么不喜欢Darcy?

there several words that we need to explain for you. Estate means a landed property, usually of considerable size. estate的意思就是指大片土地，庄园的意思。Darcy的父亲是贵族，有大片的土地。
“With his last breath, his father bequeathed me the rectory in his estate. He knew I had my heart set on joining the Church.” Here bequeath means To leave or give (property) by will. And a rectory is the house in which a parish priest or minister lives. bequeath是遗赠，按照遗嘱留赠财产的意思。而rectory是教区神父或牧师居住的房子。
I have my heart set on doing sth＝I have made my mind or I have determined to do sth. 这里短语“have my heart set on doing”是使某人下决心做某事的意思。
then Wickham continues: “Jealousy. His father, well, he loved me better and Darcy couldn’t stand it. So now, I’m a poor foot-soldier. Too lowly even to be noticed.” A foot-soldier is the lowest rank in army I guess. 他继续说到：“因为嫉妒，他的父亲更喜欢我，这让他难以忍受。所以现在，我是一个穷大兵，身份卑微，名不经传。”a foot-soldier就是那种最低等级的步兵。What is the higher rank after a foot-soldier, Brendan?
III Confrontation
E: And what about Mr. Wickham?

E: He told me of his misfortunes.
D: Oh, yes, his misfortunes. That has been very great indeed.
E: You ruined his chances, yet you treated him with sarcasm.
D: So this is your opinion of me? Thank you for explaining so fully. Perhaps these offences might have been overlooked had not your pride been hurt by my honesty in admitting scruples about our relationship. Could you expect me to rejoice in the inferiority of your circumstances?
E: And those are the words of a gentleman? From the first moment I met you, your arrogance and conceit, your selfish disdain for the feelings of others made me realize that you were the last man in the world I could ever be prevailed upon to marry.
D: Forgive me, madam, for taking up so much of your time.
“overlook”，意思就是忽视的意思，“scruple”就是犹豫不安的意思，“inferiority” 自卑。“Perhaps these offences might have been overlooked had not your pride been hurt by my honesty in admitting scruples about our relationship. Could you expect me to rejoice in the inferiority of your circumstances?” 只怪我老老实实地把我以前一误再误、迟疑不决的原因说了出来，所以伤害了你自尊心，否则你也许就不会计较我得罪你的这些地方了。难道你指望我会为你那些卑微的亲戚而欢欣鼓舞吗？
“conceit” 自负，“disdain”就是蔑视的意思。短语“be prevailed upon”就是说服的意思，相当于be persuaded into doing。I was prevailed upon to take this job.

C: You can be at no loss, Miss Bennett, to understand why I am here.
E: Indeed you are mistaken, I cannot account for this honor at all.
C: Miss Bennett, I warn you, I’m not to be trifled with. A report of most alarming nature has reached me that you intend to be united with my nephew, Mr. Darcy. I knew this to be a scandalous falsehood, though not wishing to injure him by supposing it possible, I instantly set off to make my sentiments known.
E: If you believed it to be impossible, I wonder that you troubled coming so far.
C: To hear it contradicted, Miss Bennett.
E: Your coming will be rather a confirmation surely if such a report exists.
C: If? Do you then pretend to be ignorant of it? Has it not been industriously circulated by yourself?
E: I have never heard of it.
C: And can you declare there is no foundation for it?
E: I do not pretend to possess equal frankness with your ladyship. You may ask a question which I may choose not to answer.
C: This is not to be born. Has my nephew made you an offer of marriage?
E: Your Ladyship has declared it to be impossible.
C: Let me be understood. Mr. Darcy is engaged to my daughter. Now what would you have to say?
E: If that is the case, you have no reason to suppose he would make an offer to me.
C: You selfish girl. This union has been planned since their infancy. Do you think it can be prevented by a young woman of inferior birth, whose own sister’s elopement resulted in a scandalously patched-up marriage, only achieved at the expense of your uncle? Heaven and earth! Are these shades of Pemberley to be thus polluted? Now tell me once and for all, are you engaged to him?
E: No, I am not.
C: Will you promise me never to enter into such an engagement?
E: I will not and I certainly never shall. You have insulted me in every possible way and can now have nothing further to say. I must ask you to leave immediately.
“You can be at no loss, Miss Bennett, to understand why I am here.” 你不会不明白我来这里的意思。You won’t be at loss. here “at no loss” is from “at a loss”, which originally means Perplexed; puzzled or have no idea. For instance, I am at a loss to understand those remarks.
“Indeed you are mistaken, I cannot account for this honor at all.” 您真的搞错了，我根本搞不明白我为什么会有这样的荣幸。Here account for is to be responsible for. but usually “account for” is used as to convey the meaning of “take up” as in this sentence: “the high-tech sector has accounted for one third of the local economy.” 高科技产业已经占据了本地经济的1/3。
account for表示解释，说明的意思。另外一个常用的意思就是占， Then the lady continues: “I knew this to be a scandalous falsehood, though not wishing to injure him by supposing it possible, I instantly set off to make my sentiments known.”
“a scandalous falsehood”就是一个诽谤的谎言。我知道这是一个诽谤的谎言，可是我不想通过假设这一情况属实来伤害我的侄子，所以赶紧动身来到这里把事情搞清楚。

I believe, you spoke with my aunt last night and it has taught me to hope asa I’d scarcely allowed myself before. If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes have not changed. But one word from you will silence me forever. If, however, your feelings have changed, I would have to tell you, you have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love, I love, I love you. I never wish to be parted from you from this day on.
“How can I ever make amends for such behavior?” here amends means recompense for grievance or injury. 我该怎样为这样的行为向你补偿呢？make amends就是对毁坏, 损坏的赔偿, 赔礼，记住使用复数，后面加介词for。
“You must know. Surly you must know it was all for you. You are too generous to trifle with me.” 你必须知道，你必须知道这一切都是为了你。你对我太宽容以至于都不认真地对待我。Trifle here means to deal with something as if it were of little significance or value. For instance: She trifled with my affections. 这里单词trifle就是藐视轻视、不认真地对待的意思。
